Although *lottery* is a more common term used these days around the world, **lotto** is at the very beginning. Historically, the lottery started hundreds of years ago. I prefer the Medieval Italy as the starting point. They drew winners for plots of land named *loto* in Italian. They use that word even today in English (as in parking lot). They also say *allotted* in English.

Lotto and lottery are very complex phenomena ruled by theory of probability. This web site offers plenty of information on theory of probability, theory of games, gambling mathematics. Nothing comes even close to this website.

Mathematics of lotto is extensively analyzed here. The cornerstone is the Fundamental Formula of Gambling (FFG). It is a mathematical fact that every lotto number has a repeat cycle based on FFG. In 54.3% of the wins, an individual lotto number repeats after 6 draws. Look at the end of this page. The lotto-6 number *49* recorded 79 hits in 700 draws (the UK 6/49 lotto game). More than half of its repeats were under 6 draws. The probability median calculated by FFG is exactly 6. This represents one simple, the simplest winning system at lotto. Look at this simple but undeniable lotto idea. You only look at the last 6 draws in your lotto-6 data file. You choose at random any 6 unique numbers. The winning probability increases 7.7 times. (*0.543 / 6) ^ 6 = 0.000000549* or *1 in 1,820,156*).

Normally, the probability to win with one combination in a 6/49 lotto game is *1 in C(49,6)* or *1 in 13,983,816*. This will always happen. If we ask each of 1,820,156 lotto players to select 6 unique lotto numbers from the last 6 draws, we can expect one ticket to win the jackpot. But if we ask each of 1,820,156 lotto players to select 6 unique lotto numbers randomly, the probability to win the jackpot is only 13%. (Of course, lotto number 49 can only show up in the 6th position in data files sorted in ascending order, for a 6/49 game.) Based on FFG, all 6-49 lotto numbers (all 6 of them) will come out within 52 lottery drawings — with a degree of certainty DC = 99.9%. Sometimes, all 6 lotto numbers will come out within 5 or 6 drawings (around 1-2% of the time). In more than half of the cases, all 6 lotto numbers will come out within 17 lottery drawings.
